Modern meets mid-century in Victoria

If you live in Victoria, you likely face or have faced the conundrum of how to infuse an older home with some modern aesthetics. We helped this homeowner who loves a vintage look with a modern twist. She worked with our Interior Designer, Alexis Solomon, to update her kitchen and find ways to marry her mid-century home with a clean, modern kitchen.

Because she wanted to keep her original flooring, we chose all of the finishes to coordinate with the classically warm tones of her oak floors without resorting to brown wood cabinet doors. For cabinetry, the slab, white-washed oak door (Rasdal) was a perfect mix of the two styles and tied in nicely to her oak floors. To add warmth to her whitekitchen, Alexissuggested knobs and a faucet in oil rubbed bronze and a hit of dark charcoal on one wall to create interest and depth (it's also a magnet wall so she can display her children's artwork and important papers).

Marble penny round backsplash tile installed from countertop up to the ceiling offers a strong punch of shape and texture without overhwhelming with bold colour. The gorgeous quartz counters are from BG Granite and perfect for this family because there areeasy to clean and don'tshow crumbs.

The windows to the left of the sink where too low for the cabinets so her builder shortened the windows to allow for a continuous flow of countertop.Alexis suggested lighting the glass cabs to keep it looking light and bright in between the windows.

We customized the open shelving to the right of the sink to make use of the extra 5" left over. The walls behind the pantries and fridge were originally a closet and the back of a fireplace which was removed and the cabinets built out so that it gives the illusion of a flush wall. Even though it jogs around at the back, you'd never know thanks to the design!
